About SFL
Since 2011, SFL has grown into a renowned academic think tank with officesin Utrecht and Brussels. Our vision is an economic and financial system that is ecologically sustainable, socially responsible, and financially resilient. To that end, we produce high level research, engage with key public and private (also corporate) institutions nationally and internationally and organize events that
constructively challenge the status quo. Our work aims to connect academic insights and our vision with the reality of financial institutions, regulators and policymakers at the highest levels.
Economic researcher
As a Medior/Senior Economic Researcher at the Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL), you will play a pivotal role in shaping our research agenda and delivering high-quality outputs that challenge dominant economic and financial narratives. You will lead the development of innovative research projects that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient financial system, with a particular focus on the role of the public sector. Topics could include the growth, size and stability of the financial sector, the allocation of financial resources, the role of public investment banks, new forms of payment and currency, asset markets and speculation, corporate governance, impact measurement, the role of ethics and values in financing, and monetary and fiscal policies – all in relation to social, financial and ecological sustainability.
In this role you will:
- Set-up and manage research programmes in sustainable finance.
 - (Co-)write research reports, policy briefs and articles with member of the team, SFL members and/or practitioners.
 - Set up and lead discussions with policymakers and financial institutions to discuss SFL research outputs
 - Collaborate with leading Dutch and international economists, academics, practitioners, NGOs and policymakers to translate research to practical and policy advice that can invoke changes in the financial system.
 - Support fundraising and grant applications for research initiatives.
 - Safeguard the quality and relevance of SFL’s research together with our members.
 
You will be part our young and growing team, consisting of nine passionate thinkers and doers. This is a unique opportunity to combine academic rigour with societal impact, and to position SFL at the forefront of the debate on the role of finance in the transition to a sustainable economy.
Required qualifications
- Academic background in economics, with strong expertise in macroeconomics and the financial system.
 - Proven research and analytical skills, including experience in managing research projects.
 - Minimum of 5 years relevant professional experience in academia, policy research, NGOs or financial institutions.
 - Fluency in English, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Fluency in Dutch is a plus.
 - Independent, sharp thinker with excellent writing skills.
 - Team-oriented, hands-on and enthusiastic colleague who contributes to the growth of a young and motivated team.
 
Preferred qualifications
- PhD in economics or a related field.
 - Demonstrated ability to bring a systemic vision on transforming the economic and financial system, integrating social and ecological dimensions.
 - Experience in initiating and leading cross-sectoral discussions with stakeholders (policy, finance, academia, NGOs).
 - International exposure and collaboration with leading economists or research networks.
 
What do we offer?
Depending on your experience, this position is classified at scale 11/12 of the Dutch Universities Collective Labor Agreement (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), the CLA that SFL largely follows. Starting levels are detemined based on your experience. SFL offers an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus, 29 vacation days, a pension contribution, and an inspiring workspace in Utrecht East on the University College campus. We work flexibly, with at least two in-office days per week.
